Volunteering is often an overlooked avenue towards possible employment particularly with the black communities. The pressure to find a job is ever so rampant, however parents or guardians fail to understand that the traditional ways of getting a job no longer guarantees employment. We as young people have to find new and creative ways to get your foot in the door, and volunteerism is one of those ways.
We know it might sound crazy, For your folks you will hear words like “Why are you working for free?” or “How are you going to survive off the little pay.” or “Are you out of your mind.”
We decided to create a list of benefits of volunteering to help persuade your parents or guardian to the idea of volunteering as a means to employment.
-
- Immerse yourself in the organization’s culture
-
- Build relationships to influence and persuade effectively
-
- Gain insight into each department’s roles and responsibilities
-
- Learn from mistakes without the pressure of consequences
-
- Showcase your value and demonstrate your skills—free of charge
-
- Identify potential weaknesses within the organization
-
- Leverage available resources to enhance your experience
-
- Gain valuable experience during your volunteer phase
-
- Recognize the key decision-makers in the organization
-
- Enjoy the process and have fun before securing employment
